Notebook does not recognize the ';Line In'; jack. The Audio Control Panel shows no Line In device either.?

The laptop shares the mic and line in jack. Before i restored the laptop, whenever i inserted a 3.5 mm cable into the jack, windows or the driver would prompt me to choose what i wanted the device to be treated as ';Microphone'; or ';Line In.'; It no longer prompts me to do that. I have download all the new audio drivers as well. In the audio control options under the Recording Tab. It shows 2 Microphone devices. Could it be that perhaps Vista SP 2 can solve this problem?

Mic and Line in do the same thing. Windows, which I assume you are using, does not normally prompt to determine the difference. I would assume you had some other software that did that. Since MIC/LineIn do the same thing, I wouldn't worry about it as long as it works.
